MY INTERNSHIP WITH SEA SYNERGY

Hi! My name is Jolynn Moll, and I am a 21-year-old marine science student at Galway NUIG, living in Co. Kerry. Born in France near Toulouse, I moved to Ireland with my family when I was four years old. My educational journey took me to primary school near Inch Beach, then to Cahersiveen and Portmagee, and later to New Zealand for two years during my teenage years. This diverse background has fueled my passion for marine science and conservation, ultimately leading me to Sea Synergy.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with Sea Synergy as a Marine Education and Research Intern. From the 1st of May 2024, I worked in the beautiful coastal town of Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry, Ireland.

Sea Synergy: A Hub of Marine Awareness and Research

Sea Synergy is a Marine Awareness, Research, and Activity Centre that offers educational programs, outdoor adventures, and marine science research. As an intern, I was entrusted with numerous responsibilities, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally.

Engaging Activities and Education

During the serene summer months, I assisted with various activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, and stand-up paddleboarding, catering to clients of all ages and abilities. Additionally, I delivered educational talks and workshops, enriching the community’s knowledge about marine conservation. These experiences honed my public speaking skills.

Social Media and Community Engagement

One of my key roles was managing Sea Synergy’s social media platforms. I shared captivating stories, photos, and updates about our activities and research, helping to raise awareness and engage with a broader audience. Citizen science and community involvement were integral parts of the Sea Synergy Oyster Project. I presented our research findings during school presentations and local events, sharing my passion for marine conservation and engaging with the public.

 Research and Fieldwork

A significant part of my internship involved contributing to the Sea Synergy Oyster Project, which aimed to establish the feasibility of European oyster reef restoration in the Portmagee Channel. I participated in both intertidal and snorkel surveys, collecting crucial data on the native oyster population. This hands-on experience allowed me to hone my species identification, surveying, and scientific report-writing skills. Applying my university knowledge in real-world scenarios was immensely fulfilling and provided me with invaluable insights into marine research.

My Favourite Part of this Internship

The most valuable experiences during my placement came from working under Anna Kellagher. Her unwavering passion for nature made me feel like I was always in a David Attenborough documentary and free to ask questions at will! It was a dream come true and I want to thank Anna for all her help and patience.

 Conclusion

My internship with Sea Synergy has been an unforgettable journey filled with learning, growth, and adventure. The combination of hands-on research, community engagement, and outdoor activities made for a well-rounded and enriching experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such a dedicated team and in such a breathtaking location. This placement has solidified my passion for marine conservation, and I look forward to carrying the skills and experiences I’ve gained into my future career.
